tip of the month

Do you have an antique that you would like to refinish? Well, here are some easy steps on how to remove the existing finish and get it ready for sanding and applying a new finish. 1.Set up your workstation in a well-ventilated area, like the garage. 2.Spread out a drop cloth. Spread newspapers on top of it. 3.Clean entire piece with paint thinner and a scouring sponge. Dry off with common shop towels. 4.Spray down the entire piece with paint & varnish remover. Use a paintbrush with natural bristles within detailed crevices. Set a timer based on manufacturer's instructions. 5.Using a dull-end scraper, start scraping off the old varnish. Place waste in a disposable pan. 6. Spray again over detailed spots and gently scrub with steel wool. Repeat this process until the piece is free of varnish. 7.Clean off the entire piece with steel wool and lacquer thinner. This will remove and neutralized leftover varnish remover and also protect wood from raising. 8. Dispose of all chemical-soaked rags, steel wook, and brushes according to local regulations. 9. Let the piece of furniture dry for 24 hours.
